The installation instructions should illustrate how the unit comes apart. The instructions simply say "remove cover plate"! It is not obvious how that is accomplished.

We had an older unit (4.5 years old) which slowly stopped working over several weeks, and the display slowly went bad over this period of time. After receiving the new unit, we unplugged the heater's power cord from the wall to disconnect the power, then removed and replaced the front panel (the control portion) of the old unit w/ the front panel of the new unit, and left the backplane of the old unit w/ all the wiring in place. After we snapped the front panel of the new unit to the back panel of the old unit, and reconnected the heater's power, everything works fine. It was a bit difficult to remove the top panel from the backplane (took us about 10 minutes), the rest of the job was pretty straight forward (took us about 5 mins to get everything working again). Then another 10 mins or so to reprogram the new unit.
